One Room Challenge – Tween Bedroom Makeover

Well, we are here! We “officially” can begin our first journey into the One Room Challenge! I’ll admit, I had doubts this day would really come. Our original start date was April 2nd. And then, crazy things started happening in the world to bring everything to a halt. More about that in a later post.  

Now, I have to be truthful. This project began at the end of March 2020. We are now in the first week of May and we have been moving at a snail’s pace. My goal is to ramp it up and for the next 8 weeks, so we can bang out the rest of the project for the big reveal. In the end, there will be one happy 10 year old when that happens!

My beautiful, sweet, ten-year-old daughter has had her room, for the most part, styled the same since we moved into this house when she was 18 months old. So, as with all of my girls, at 10 we give them a well-deserved upgrade. She has been so patient in waiting, sleeping in the toy room floor with her mattresses. We will be refreshing her bedroom to a little more grown-up style ironically, using similar colors she currently has, but in a more a tween appropriate style. It will be a colorful (think rainbows and polka dots for a tween), functional, beautiful bedroom that she will enjoy as she enters her teens. (Ahh, how is it possible that I am thinking like this for the baby girl in the family!)

Guess what? To add to the excitement, Better Homes & Gardens will be the media sponsor and will be selecting two Guest Participants by the editors as Featured Designers in the Fall or Spring of 2020/2021 (dependent on COVID-19) Now, that would be a dream! (I even proclaimed this dream in front of a Networking crowd two years ago!)

Before diving into what my daughter’s requests, let’s take a look at her room before the makeover.

So, what does my daughter want?  What’s the plan?

During our discussions, she found inspiration and restated how she loves rainbow colors and polka dots.  Hear me loud, this beautiful girl is true to herself, as she has loved these things since as far back as I could remember!

Chloe’s Room Checklist:

First, she wanted hardwood floors, which we had to ixnay because that would open up a whole can of worms upstairs and we were not ready to embark on that large scale of a project, but she has good taste! But the items below will all be addressed in our makeover.

• Replacing all trim

• Painting walls, ceiling and trim

• New ceiling light fixtures

• New sconces

• New Lamps

• New bedding

• New Window Treatments

• New artwork

• A desk with chair

• Reading Nook

• Shelving to put green plants on

• Organize closets

• Possible wallpaper

• new bed frame
