ORC Week Four – Tween Bedroom

May 28, 2020

We made it to the halfway mark! My daughter is getting so excited for her room to finally be done and honestly, so am I. This has been a long journey so it will be so joyous to see that glowing smile on her face.

First, after last week’s curveball, I was a little worried that we were going to have a difficult time finding another installer. Instead, we reached out to other tradesmen we work with and asked for referrals. Perhaps it was kismet, but we found an incredible installer that completed the job in about 90 minutes! Impressive, right?! Lucky for Jennifer Lynn Interiors, we have a new wallpaper installer to add to the rolodex (virtual of course).

Two important areas we will discuss today is the age-old question “What comes first, fabric or paint selection?” and diving into pattern matching.

What comes first, fabric or paint selection?

Let me give it to you straight, it’s much better to pick out the fabrics first, and then find a paint color for the room that goes well with the fabrics. Here’s the bottom line – paint is much less expensive and easier to change than your couch, chairs, rugs and draperies!

What is pattern matching?

Now, I will talk in terms of wallpaper, because that is what we were working on this week, but this also is true with fabric for window treatments, upholstery, pillows and bedding. To begin, you need to find the pattern repeat. The pattern repeat is the vertical distance between where the pattern is identical again (repeats). That distance can be less than an inch or as much as the entire width of the wallpaper. There are several kinds of pattern repeats: random pattern match, straight across match, and drop match. So, it is a strategic, mathematical and remarkable skill to pattern match flawlessly those repeats. One I trust in my skilled tradesman!
